Frequently asked questions
What is Pharmacy First impetigo treatment?
Under Pharmacy First, our pharmacists can assess and treat impetigo without the need for a GP appointment. Where appropriate, the pharmacist can supply antibiotic cream or oral antibiotics directly.
Do I need to pay for this service?
No, this is a free NHS service. There is no charge for the consultation or for any medicine supplied by the pharmacist.
What does impetigo look like?
Impetigo typically appears as red sores or blisters that burst quickly, leaving crusty golden-brown patches. It most commonly affects the face, especially around the nose and mouth, but can appear anywhere on the body.
Is impetigo contagious?
Yes, impetigo is highly contagious. It spreads through close contact and by sharing towels, flannels, or bedding. You should avoid close contact with others and keep children off school or nursery until the sores have crusted over, or for 48 hours after starting antibiotic treatment.
