Frequently asked questions
What is Pharmacy First UTI treatment?
Pharmacy First allows our pharmacists to assess and treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women aged 16 to 64 without the need for a GP appointment. If appropriate, the pharmacist can supply antibiotics directly under an NHS patient group direction.
Do I need to pay for this service?
No, this is a free NHS service. There is no charge for the consultation or for any medicine supplied by the pharmacist.
What symptoms should I have before visiting?
Common symptoms of a UTI include a burning or stinging sensation when passing urine, needing to urinate more frequently, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and pain in the lower abdomen. If you have these symptoms, visit your pharmacy for an assessment.
What if my symptoms are more serious?
If the pharmacist identifies any red flag symptoms such as fever, back pain, blood in your urine, or if you are pregnant, they will refer you to your GP or an appropriate NHS service for further care.
Do I need an appointment?
You don’t have to book — you can come in when we’re open. If you’d rather have a set time, call us on 0121 328 7123.
