Frequently asked questions

What is Pharmacy First infected insect bite treatment?

Under Pharmacy First, our pharmacists can assess and treat insect bites that have become infected, without the need for a GP appointment. Where appropriate, the pharmacist can supply antibiotics directly.

Do I need to pay for this service?

No, this is a free NHS service. There is no charge for the consultation or for any medicine supplied by the pharmacist.

How do I know if my insect bite is infected?

Signs of an infected insect bite include increasing redness and swelling around the bite, the area feeling hot to the touch, pus or discharge from the bite, and increasing pain. If you notice these signs, visit your pharmacy for an assessment.

When should I go to A&E instead?

Seek emergency care if you have difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, mouth, or throat, feel dizzy or faint, or develop a widespread rash after a bite or sting. These could be signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Do I need an appointment?

You can book a slot online above, or just come in when we’re open — both work.
