Frequently asked questions
What is Pharmacy First shingles treatment?
Under Pharmacy First, our pharmacists can assess and treat shingles without the need for a GP appointment. If you are seen within 72 hours of the rash appearing and meet the clinical criteria, the pharmacist can supply antiviral medicine directly.
Do I need to pay for this service?
No, this is a free NHS service. There is no charge for the consultation or for any medicine supplied by the pharmacist.
What are the symptoms of shingles?
Shingles usually starts with a tingling or painful sensation in an area of skin, followed by a rash of fluid-filled blisters that typically appears in a band on one side of the body. You may also feel generally unwell with a headache or fever.
Why is it important to act quickly?
Antiviral medicine is most effective when started within 72 hours of the rash appearing. Early treatment can reduce the severity of symptoms and lower the risk of complications such as postherpetic neuralgia (long-lasting nerve pain).
Do I need an appointment?
You can book a slot online above, or just come in when we’re open — both work.
